Who we are

VARP began as a precursor to the publication of a climbing guide for climbing the Prague rocks. Gradually, however, the website got out of control and grew into its own project, which you are on now. The writing of TOPOs and the vision of the printed book soon took over the Tokyo Olympics, international championships, climbs, equipment reviews, Christmas lists, climbing and the best walls in Prague. But we still stick to (or at least try to) our original vision. VARP (former Ahold.cz) is the site for a new rock database for Prague and Central Bohemia.

Our mission

The main mission of the site and the source of who we are (at least here) is twofold. For one thing, we are a database. Our goal from the beginning was to fill in the gaps on the pages of the CHS database and ideally surpass Lezec.cz in terms of quality and organization (although we draw from both and are forever grateful to their climbers!). With our help, we would like no climber to have to wander blindly around Hlubočepy, Borová skála or any other area in our area and search in vain for a route to climb. So that no one comes to the rock again and finds out that the label was wrong and they don't have the right equipment or strength to climb, and most importantly, that rock climbing is accessible to everyone.

The second task that sometimes obsesses us is to advise new climbers about things that we have suffered ourselves. Whether it's what equipment to buy, how to practice or how to behave in the rocks, we want to pass it all on to you. Ideally, somehow digestible and without big sticks around.

Climber's Guide to the Rocks

The main dream of the creators (Patrika and Honza) is a printed guide. We are currently preparing, with the help of very good climbers, a bouldering guide in Divoká Šárka, which we would like to publish at the end of this year (2022). Next up is sport and traditional climbing in and around Prague. Areas such as Hlubočepské plotny, Borová skála, Řež and so on.

Do you want to join?

If you are a climber or interested in climbing, welcome to the VARP community! We are working on improved community, personal accounts and other things on the site that will bring climbers together. But if you can't wait, write to us at Instagram, Facebook or email and we will be very happy to chat with you, go out for a beer or, ideally, go climbing! If you are better than us (climb more than V6 on boulder and 7a on rope) please join us and enrich us with knowledge!

Do you have a climbing experience, story or topic you want to write about? Let us know! We are more than happy to give you the space and platform.
